UDA MP, Mary Wamaua threatens to lead protests into State House over water distribution in the constituency

UDA MP, Mary Wamaua threatens to lead protests into State House over water distribution in the constituency.

Women in the Maragua Constituency, led by local parliamentarian Mary Wamaua, have vowed to plan a march to the state house over water distribution in the constituency.

The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) member of parliament was lamenting failure of the Murang’a South Water and Sanitation Company Ltd (MUSWASCO) to comply with water distribution during a demonstration.

Wamaua demanded that the Water Services Regulatory Board (WASREB) investigate the matter, threatening to stage a statehouse protest in the event that the problem is not resolved immediately.

“We demand that the Water Services Regulatory Board (WASREB) reexamines the non-compliance by Murang’a South Water and Sanitation Company Ltd (MUSWASCO), failure to which we shall march to state house,” Wamaua stated.

In an address to the media during the demonstration, women decried how poor hygiene due to lack of water had made their lives difficult.

“We don’t have water. If you visit different areas in Maragua you will find that all are crying due to lack of water. Women are not clean, just come to Kenol and see how people are dirty, there is no water for one to even take a birth,” one of the women stated.

In addition, despite their repeated complaints, locals accused the Murang’a County government of showing indifference to their problems with the provision of water in the community.

The women added that the crisis was even having an impact on local education, as school-age children had to temporarily put their studies on hold in order to find water.

“When kids come from school they have no time to study, they have to go to the rivers to get water. What is our governor doing? People are suffering because of a lack of water,” a resident attending the demonstrations stated.

Further, she expressed her fear for diseases among the residents as the water that they had resorted to using was dirty and appeared to be green in color.

Adding to the MP’s sentiments, Pauline Njeri, a UDA nominated member of the Muranga County Assembly stated that she was ready to join the march to restore the dignity of the women.

“As a representative of the women in the UDA Party in Muranga county, we are not going to relent. We shall not sit and watch women suffering, lacking water to cook and even bathe,” she stated.
