Police probe the death of a Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology (JOOUST) student alleged to have killed himself in Siaya.

Identified as Laban Onyango, the 25-year-old student based in JOOUST’s Siaya campus reportedly attempted to take his life at a rented house at Southlands Estate in Siaya town.

According to Siaya County Police Commander Cleti Kimaiyo, the incident was reported to Siaya Police Station by the hospital’s Medical Superintendent Dr Michael Oduor who stated that a dead body had been brought to their casualty room as an emergency case.

Dr. Oduor stated that officers from that station visited the hospital and established that the deceased’s girlfriend Sharon Achola who is also a student at the same University’s Siaya Campus had rushed his boyfriend to the hospital after he attempted to hang himself using a Lesso.

Mr. Kimaiyo said that according to Sharon, her boyfriend had visited her on Tuesday morning and during the night he kept threatening to take his life and even made a Facebook post about his intentions, claiming that his parents and siblings were making his life hard.

On Wednesday morning, Sharon woke up and went to take a bath then returned and found the door locked from inside.

She then raised an alarm that attracted neighbours who swiftly responded and climbed over the roof only to find Laban Onyago hanging with a Lesso around his neck.

Mr. Kimaiyo stated that they went ahead to cut the Lesso then rushed Onyango to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The scene was processed and documented before the body was moved to the same hospital’s mortuary pending autopsy.
