Forty-two people confirmed dead after heavy flash floods wiped out several homes in Mai Mahiu following heavy rains

Forty-two people confirmed dead after heavy flash floods wiped out several homes in Mai Mahiu following heavy rains.

At least 40 bodies were collected from various places after heavy flash floods wiped out several homes in Kamuchiri Village Mai Mahiu, Nakuru County following heavy rains.

Naivasha police commander Stephen Kirui confirmed they had collected at least 40 bodies from debris on Monday.

“We have 40 bodies so far collected and many more are covered by the mud. Many cars too are covered,” he said from the scene.

Officials at the mortuary said they had received 42 bodies.

The floodwaters originated from a nearby river that broke its banks in the wee hours of Monday morning, according to Naivasha Member of Parliament (MP) Jane Kihara.

She further urged residents residing in flood-risk areas to relocate to higher ground.

“It’s something we have not seen. The road is gone, the one going to Narok has caved in also,” she said.
