Former Chief Justice David Maraga made a surprise appearance during the swearing of the six judges at State House on Wednesday, September 14.
The event was witnessed by President William Ruto, who appointed the judges on Tuesday, September 13 after being sworn in.
The former Chief Justice was asked to join President Ruto, his deputy Rigathi Gachahua, Chief Justice Martha Koome, Deputy CJ Philomena Mwilu, and the new judges during a photo session.
“Could I also request the Chief Justice emeritus to join in that picture,” the master of the ceremony, Korir Sing’oei requested.
Evans Makori Kiago and Judith Cheruiyot Omange Elizabeth were sworn in as judges of the Environment and Land Court, while Muchelule, Wednon Korir, Prof. Joel Ngugi, and George Odunga were sworn in as judges of the court of appeal.
President Ruto reaffirmed his dedication to assisting the judicial system. “As we advance Kenya, I’m looking forward to collaborating and supporting the judiciary. I want to reassure you that my administration would uphold the judiciary’s and other institutions’ independence, “He informed the sitting judges.
Kenya, he declared “can only be improved if we establish the rule of law in our nation. Any alternative path results in chaos and disarray. We are all equal before the law and our constitution, as Kenyans, I beg of you all. Former Chief Justice David Maraga has had a sour relationship with former president Uhuru Kenyatta’s government.
The relationship hit rock bottom when Maraga nullified the 2017 presidential results.
Uhuru accused Maraga of trying to subvert the will of the people and promised to revisit after the election.
During Uhuru’s second term, the budgetary allocation for the judiciary was slashed.
In addition, Uhuru Kenyatta refused to appoint the six judges recommended by the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) for promotion.
