Michelle Obama, and Melinda Gates partner educational scholarships to Kenyan girls through the “Get Her There” campaign.
Former American First Lady Michelle Obama partnered with Melinda Gates and Amal Clooney in offering educational scholarships to Kenyan girls.
Speaking during the campaign’s ‘Get Her There’ launch, Michelle disclosed that a number of Kenyan girls lack access to education due to physical, financial, and social-cultural concerns.
According to Valerie Jarrett, CEO of the Obama Foundation, the initiative will provide funding for institutions and organizations that encourage girls’ education.
“The campaign plans to fund more than 100 organizations and support 12 community-based organizations that work to improve girls’ education in Kenya, India, and Columbia,” Jarrett stated.
The former first lady gave her personal account of the struggles she went through to attain her education and explained the impact it had on her life.
“I want them to know Michelle Obama, the girl from the South Side of Chicago. I want to break down that wall of impossibility, to let them know that I have been there, and yes, every other moment, I feel self-doubt.
“Education made a difference in my life. It has opened my life and my possibilities, and has given me the tools,” she stated.
Michelle added that parents play an integral role in ensuring that the girl child is taken to school.
“I came from a community and a family where we didn’t have much but I had, a mother and a father who believed in my possibility, who saw me, who fueled my flame, constantly,” she stated.
During the event, Miria Kimani, who benefitted from the foundations, narrated how well-wishers saved her from dropping out of school.
Kimani is currently a civil engineering student at Lafayette College in Pennsylvania, USA.
Samburu Girls Foundation founder, Wanjiru Wahome, was also a keynote speaker at the event.
