Kenya to manufacture Africa’s cheapest smartphone in 8 months’ time, Ruto
Kenya to manufacture Africa’s cheapest smartphone at a cost of Ksh 5K in 8 months’ time according to President Ruto.
President William Ruto on Thursday, November 10, announced his administration’s intention to produce affordable smartphones in Kenya.
Speaking at the Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industries (KNCCI) annual general meeting at PCEA St. Andrew’s in Nairobi, Ruto mentioned that he was in discussions with the region’s telecoms to consider a plan for achieving the objective.
According to the President, the action will help make smartphones accessible and affordable for micro, small, and medium-sized business traders (MSMEs).
“The real last mile in technology is the gadgets and we are working with our telcos so that we can have a smartphone that is below ksh5,000,” the President stated.
“In the next 8 to12 months, we will have the cheapest smartphone in Africa manufactured in Kenya.”
Ruto stated that his government is committed to enhancing network connectivity in a bid to scale up e-commerce and create employment in the country.
Ruto reaffirmed his dedication to implementing the ‘digital Super Highway’ plan aimed at connecting all parts of Kenya to the internet.
In addition, he revealed plans to digitize government all services in the country.
“I am very confident that employment is going to be ready and available if we can ensure that spread technology and have financing,” he stated.
Ruto urged the KNCCI to keep up its efforts to boost investment and innovation by providing advice and mentorship.
He used his signature initiative, the “Hutlser’s Fund,” as an illustration of how assisting MSMEs in the nation is moving in the correct path.
“I challenge our financial institutions to be flexible in how they lend their finances and consider the aspect of cost. It is time we inspire our MSMEs by ensuring they have access to affordable credit,” he stated.
