President William Ruto now says that universities will issue new letters to parents indicating the correct amount of money that they are supposed to pay for their children in universities.
Speaking in Kisii County on Wednesday, August 14, President Ruto said the letters that had been issued earlier by universities were misleading and indicated the total amount of university courses instead of the amount parents should pay.
“The letters that were issued by our universities were misleading because they were talking about the cost of the courses. We want the letters that were released earlier to be withdrawn and proper letters issued as to the amount of money the parent is supposed to pay and not the cost of the course.
“We are going to instruct universities to issue new letters from today that will indicate how much a parent is supposed to pay,” said President Ruto.
At the same time, the Head of State assured parents that no child will miss out on university education because of the ability of their parents.
President Ruto said the government will ensure every child secures a spot in higher learning institutions.
“I want to assure parents that we will make sure that no child in Kenya remains out of higher education because of the ability of their parent. We will make sure every child has an opportunity to acquire higher education knowledge in our universities and TVETs,” he added.

On July 20, the government revoked university fee letters that had been issued to parents ahead of the September intake.
Higher Education Principal Secretary Beatrice Inyangala in a communique stipulated that the fees previously allocated for the programmes and which were outlined in the invitation letters would not be paid by the students.
PS Inyangala said the new revised fees would be communicated by the respective institutions.
“The Ministry of Education wishes to inform the public, particularly parents/guardians of students, and, students that the fees to be paid by students and their families/guardians as relates to the full cost of each degree programme as previously communicated in the admission letters is hereby nullified, and, does not apply any more,” Inyangala remarked.
