President William Ruto has conferred the Eldoret Municipality with a City charter.

The Head of State also said the Senate approved the conferment of the City status to Eldoret.

“In exercise of the powers conferred on the Head of State and Government under section 7 of the Urban Areas and Cities Act, and all other enabling provisions of law, I Kipchirchir William Samoei Ruto President of the Republic of Kenya and Commander in Chief of Kenya’s Defence Forces do herby ordain declare and direct that the Municipality of Eldoret has been conferred with City Status,” said President Ruto.

He went on to say that Eldoret will henceforth have the city status, rank, powers, and responsibilities given to cities under the law and will be now called the City of Eldoret.

“Now henceforth by dint of this presents and charter may it be known to all that Eldoret Municipality shall have the status of a city together with all such rank, powers, and responsibilities as are incidental to a city under the law and its name is decreed to be the city of Eldoret,” Ruto added.

Eldoret is now the country’s fifth city after Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, and Nakuru.

Nakuru was granted city status in 2021 under the administration of former President Uhuru Kenyatta.

The conferment of the City status was initially planned set to take place on Thursday, August 8, 2024, but was postponed by the office of the President by a week.
