The family of the late Ian Sing’oei has broken its silence after the deceased’s mysterious death.
The 27-year-old was discovered dead in a river in Kasarani’s Mwiki area, Nairobi county.
Sing’oei’s death sparked speculation, with some Kenyan social media users linking it with the recent spate of abductions.
The deceased, an engineer by profession, was the son of Elgeyo Marakwet County Commissioner John Korir.
In a joint family statement, the bereaved kin of the deceased sought to delink him from the assertions that he met his death in the course of anti-government activism.
Korir established that his son was with his friends on late December 31, 2024, before his demise.
They reported him missing after he could not be found via phone.
“Our late son was in the company of his friends on New Year’s Eve at the Mwiki area in Kasarani, whereupon he went missing and could not be reached on the phone, triggering an extensive search and reports to the police,” the county commissioner said in the statement.
According to him, the family was satisfied by the preliminary probe undertaken by the police which showed Sing’oei was not caught in the abductions web.
“The police service has given us good cooperation and concern on this matter. We have worked together in search of our son. We as a family have entrusted the police to conduct in-depth investigations into this incident and wish to categorically disassociate the demise of our beloved Ian from the speculations, rumours, and innuendos being circulated in the media portraying our son’s case being associated with abduction,”
the family said.

“For the avoidance of doubt, our son was such a law-abiding young professional who we have no reason whatsoever to associate with the allegations being erroneously publicized in the media. Our son has never been an activist nor inclined to politics. Those behind these erroneous publications are hurting the family alot more since it is our honest contention that our son’s demise has no relationship with the cases being referred to,” the statement read on.
A postmortem was conducted on the body preserved at Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral and Research Hospital (KUTRRH), with the initial report showing Sing’oei drowned.
The Ministry of Interior issued a statement sharing in the grief of the bereaved family.
It urged the public to desist from speculating about the death.
“We stand with the family in mourning a young, talented professional whose life was tragically cut short under circumstances that are currently being investigated. During this time of immense grief, we kindly urge everyone to honour the family’s request for privacy and uphold the dignity of the departed,” the Ministry said.
