Laikipia University students dies while hiking trip at Subukia waterfalls
Students from Laikipia University staged protests on Saturday, March 21, blocking sections of the Nyahururu-Nakuru Highway as they demanded accountability from the institution following the death of a fellow student.
The demonstrations, which caused major traffic disruption, saw students barricade the busy highway and engage police in running battles as tensions escalated.
The unrest was triggered by the death of first-year Media and Communication student Hillary Vumilu, who was fatally injured after being struck by a rock during a hiking trip at Subukia Viewpoint waterfalls on Friday, March 20.
His death is reported to have shaken the student community, sparking grief and anger among students who have questioned how the situation was handled. This prompted them to take to the streets to protest.
Students alleged that delays in emergency response contributed to the loss of their colleague, claiming that timely medical intervention could have saved his life.
Some protesters accused the university administration of negligence, particularly over claims that there was a delay in releasing an ambulance to evacuate the injured student.
Images circulating online showed the injured student being transported on a boda boda in a desperate attempt to rush him to a medical facility before he later succumbed.

The protests paralysed transport along the Nyahururu-Nakuru Highway for hours, affecting motorists and drawing a heavy police response.
Police officers were deployed to the scene and engaged the students in confrontations, firing teargas and warning shots in the air to disperse the crowds.
In a statement issued on Saturday, Laikipia University confirmed the incident, noting that the student was injured during a hiking activity and was first taken to a nearby health facility for initial treatment before being referred to Nyahururu County Referral Hospital.
The university said an ambulance transfer was coordinated for further medical attention, but the student sadly passed away while receiving treatment at the hospital.
“It is with profound sorrow that Laikipia University announces the untimely passing of Hillary Vulimu, Registration Number HD/COM/3444/25. He was a cherished first-year student who was pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Communication and Media,” the university confirmed.
Adding that, “Following the incident, the students promptly arranged for his transport to Michael Nursing Home, Subukia, for immediate first aid. The facility referred him to Nyahururu County Referral Hospital for further medical attention. Regrettably, he passed away while at the hospital receiving casualty treatment.”
