Senior doctors called for dissolution of Nairobi Hospital board

A group of senior doctors at Nairobi Hospital had last year called for the resignation of the facility’s entire Board of Management and the immediate establishment of an interim board to steer the institution out of its current crisis.

In a letter addressed to Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale, dated November 3, 2025, the medics outlined a series of sweeping reforms they say are necessary to restore integrity, accountability, and public confidence in the hospital.

The doctors proposed the formation of an Interim Board of Directors with a limited mandate of between six and 10 months to undertake urgent corrective measures.

Among its key responsibilities would be initiating a forensic audit of the membership of the Kenya Hospital Association (KHA), which owns the hospital.

“The interim board should initiate and facilitate a forensic audit of the membership of the Association and expel ‘members’ who were not validly admitted,” the doctors said in the letter.

They also called for a comprehensive audit of the hospital’s financial management systems, citing concerns over possible misappropriation of funds.

“An in-depth forensic audit of the financial management of the hospital is necessary to prevent further mismanagement and to recommend recovery or prosecution of persons involved in misappropriation,” the letter reads.

Further, the medics urged a review of the KHA’s Articles of Association to address what they described as persistent conflicts of interest within the current board. They proposed that amendments be tabled and voted on by members to strengthen governance structures.

The interim board, they added, should also organise a general meeting to facilitate the election of a new Board of Management and oversee reforms to the association’s governing framework.

In addition to governance changes, the doctors recommended the termination of the employment of the hospital’s Company Secretary and Chief Executive Officer, arguing that leadership overhaul is necessary to restore stability.

They also called for the conclusion of investigations into alleged financial impropriety involving board members, and urged that those found culpable face prosecution and civil recovery proceedings through the Office of the Attorney General.

They warned that failure to act swiftly could have dire consequences for one of Kenya’s leading private health institutions.

“If the situation continues to persist, then it is only a matter of time when the entire Hospital shall collapse,” the doctors cautioned.

The signatories to the letter include David Silverstein, Martin Wanyoike, Stephen Muhudhia, and Florence Murila , all senior consultants at the hospital.

Nairobi Hospital is owned by the Kenya Hospital Association, whose patron is the sitting President of Kenya, adding further weight to the concerns raised.
