GSU officers to undergo fresh training to curb protests and goon threats; CS Murkomen

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has announced that the government is re-training new recruits under the General Service Unit (GSU) and the administration police.

Murkomen spoke on Wednesday, April 15, , where he revealed the training is aimed at ensuring the officers are better prepared for crowd control and curbing gang-related violence amid rising insecurity in the country.

Speaking to recruits at the National Police College in Embakasi,  Murkomen said the fresh training emphasises impartiality and constitutional values.

“The curriculum aims to ensure you get the necessary skills to understand the values and principles of the Constitution. When you are serving the people of Kenya, you will be expected to treat everyone equally without consideration of their tribes, region, religion or social background,” he said.

The CS explained that the GSU will be retooled using lessons from recent youth-led protests, with new strategies to mitigate chaos.

He also mentioned that integrating new technology, such as private CCTV, will improve response to threats and bolster training.

The announcement comes amid heightened political tensions and preceded United Opposition leader Rigathi Gachagua’s seven-day ultimatum to President William Ruto.

Opposition leaders are demanding the cancellation of the G-to-G fuel framework, suspension of fuel levies and the resignation of Energy and Petroleum CS Opiyo Wandayi.

Members of the opposition have threatened mass demonstrations over fuel prices if their demands are not addressed.

Further, the training is a response to intensifying goon activity after calls for security intervention from government officials.

Murkomen warned that some politicians are involved in allegedly mobilising youths to incite goon violence during protests.

The GSU has historically managed demonstrations, and recent protests exposed gaps in current approaches, prompting the need for updated training and better preparedness.
