TSC responds to April salary delays amid KEWOTA scandal

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has addressed claims of delays in the payment of teachers’ April salaries following reports circulating on social media.

The Commission refuted a fake public statement dated April 19 that alleged teachers nationwide should brace for delays in their salaries due to the ongoing controversy surrounding the Kenya Women Teachers Association (KEWOTA).

The false notice claimed that the delays were linked to a High Court order involving KEWOTA, which suspended decisions related to continued salary deductions.

TSC dismissed the claims as misleading, urging teachers and the public to rely only on official communication channels for accurate information regarding salary payments.

This suspension was a result of a media exposé regarding unauthorised payroll deductions that implicated its Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Benta Opande, accused of presiding over unauthorised withdrawals and extensive nepotism.

However, on April 17, 2026, the Employment and Labor Relations Court issued a stay order in favor of KEWOTA, halting the suspension and allowing the monthly deductions to continue pending further investigation.

The fake statement also added that the TSC had closed payroll on April 16 and was set to pay salaries from Friday, April 17,  but teachers will have to wait till next week to get their salaries.

With these allegations, TSC has come forward dismissing all the claims, and urging the public to rely on official channels of communications to avoid falling prey into false and misleading information.

“Teachers and the public are advised to only rely on official TSC communication channels for official and verified information,” emphasised TSC.

TSC also confirmed that Junior School interns and replacement teachers recruited in January have been included in the April payroll and will receive their salaries along with pending arrears.
