Japan opens 2027 scholarships for KCSE graduates; How to apply

The Government of Japan, through the Japanese Embassy in Kenya, has opened applications for the Monbukagakusho Scholarship, popularly known as MEXT, for Kenyan Form Four leavers.

This announcement was made on April 21 via their social media platform, expressing the embassy’s excitement to open scholarship applications, particularly for Kenyan students.

“ We are happy to announce that the 2027 MEXT Scholarship for Kenyan nationals is now open! “ stated the embassy.

To qualify, the embassy requires that one be a Kenyan citizen. This can be through birth, registration by marriage, adoption, lawful residence, or naturalization.

Additionally, the scholarship requires students to have strong Kenya Certificate for Primary Education (KCSE) results to have a real shot at studying in Japan for free.

This implies that for the Undergraduate category, applicants will need a KCSE mean grade of A plain. Further, the candidate must have scored  A plain in at least four subjects, including Mathematics, English, and Kiswahili.

The Colleges of Technology in Japan, also known as KOSEN, are specialised 5-year higher education institutions for students starting at age 15 is one of the institutions where successful applicants will be placed.

This institution in particular requires a minimum mean grade of A minus, along with individual scores of A minus or higher in Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry, and at least a B plus in English as an additional subject requirement.

Additionally, the Specialised Training Colleges (Senshu Gakko) in Japan are post-secondary vocational institutions offering 2–4-year practical training in fields such as IT, engineering, business, fashion, and healthcare, which is another institution where applicants will be placed.

This category, in and of itself, sets a slightly lower bar, with a mean grade of B plain needed. However, applicants must score at least a B+ in Mathematics and a minimum of a B plain in English to be considered eligible.

On the other hand, the Research Students category targets Kenyans seeking postgraduate education through the very same scholarship.

Applicants must hold a second-class upper division bachelor’s degree for a master’s program, or a completed master’s thesis for a PhD from an accredited university within Kenya.

The scholarship itself offers a number of benefits to successful applicants. Several things to be covered in full include tuition, airfare, and a monthly living allowance.

Likewise, the scholarship is funded directly by the Japanese government and is open across a number of categories: Undergraduate, College of Technology, Specialised Training College, and Research Students, each targeting a different academic level, from fresh KCSE graduates to postgraduate researchers, thus providing ample headroom for applicants.

To apply, prospective candidates must first download the official application forms from the Study in Japan website. Each category has its own dedicated page, along with a guideline document listing all the supporting materials required for submission.

The application process is slightly different for each of the four categories. Undergraduate applicants should head to the dedicated undergraduate applications page on studyinjapan.go.jp, which hosts the forms, detailed guidelines, and past qualifying examination papers that applicants are highly encouraged to review as part of their preparation.

On the other hand, College of Technology and Specialised Training College applicants each have separate pages on the Study in Japan platform. The links to both are included in the Embassy’s official announcement, with each page carrying everything needed to put together a complete application.

Research Students can also access their forms through the Study in Japan portal, which includes past qualifying examinations for the category, giving candidates a practical resource to sharpen their preparation ahead of the May 19 deadline.

Once completed, all forms and supporting documents listed in the Application Guideline must be compiled and either hand-delivered or posted to the Embassy’s Scholarships Desk at Mara Road, Upper Hill, Nairobi, before the stipulated time lapses.

The deadline for all applications is May 19, 2026, at 4:30 p.m., and we urge all candidates to submit well before that date to avoid last-minute setbacks.

“All applications must be submitted to the Embassy of Japan in Kenya no later than 4:30pm on Tuesday, 19th May 2026,” stressed the embassy.
