At least seven people were killed on Saturday, April 25, in a suspected banditry attack at Kamari village in Tseikuru, Kitui County.

According to police reports, the attackers, suspected to be herders of Somali origin, stormed the village and opened fire, killing the victims on the spot before fleeing.

The victims were reportedly attacked while working on a farm, before the suspects escaped into Mwingi Game Reserve using a Toyota Probox.

Kitui County Commissioner Erastus Mbui confirmed the attack, stating that the victims included one woman and six men.

One man survived the attack but sustained gunshot injuries and is currently fighting for his life at Tseikuru Level IV Hospital.

The incident also left many families with no shelter as several houses were set ablaze.

According to the authorities, the attack is part of a series of retaliatory attacks between the patrolist group and locals in the village after one herder was killed.

“It is retaliation after a herder from one community killed a herder from another in the game park. This appears to be a counterattack,” stated a police officer.

Following the attack, villagers have sought refuge in nearby bushland, with fears that the attackers may return.

The latest attack comes amid the government’s effort to contain banditry in the region that has seen many livestock stolen and lives lost.

Bandit attacks have intensified in the North Rift and upper Eastern regions, specifically targeting Meru, Isiolo, Samburu, and Turkana counties.

To contain this, the government announced it would deploy all state machinery, including the military and specialised equipment such as armoured vehicles and aircraft, to restore order in the areas.
