Thieves break into 3 churches, steal Ksh1 million in goods and cash
Members of three churches in Kirinyaga County are counting losses after thieves broke into the churches, fleeing with properties worth over KSh 1 million and sacred items desecrated.
The affected churches include St. Joseph Catholic Church, an Anglican church (ACK) in Kiamangunyi, and Fountain of Life Church.
According to church leaders, unknown intruders broke into the sanctuaries on the night of Saturday, May 2, gaining entry by forcing open windows before accessing various rooms within the premises.
“We are saddened because thieves got access to our church premises and stole musical instruments totalling over Ksh 500,000,” one member stated.
“We received information from a neighbour that there were items on his farm. When we went to verify, we confirmed that the goods belonged to our church. It then became clear that the church had been broken into,” another congregant stated.
Among the items stolen were musical instruments, including microphones, a keyboard, and a sound receiver.
Bizarrely, attackers also drank the Holy Sacrament and made away with some cash that was present inside the churches.

Church leaders report that the criminals appeared to have moved freely within the church compounds, prompting fears over growing insecurity in the area.
They are now calling for urgent security patrols and improved surveillance to prevent similar incidents.
The incident is not an isolated matter in the country, as thieves have, in recent times, targeted churches where they don’t get much resistance when executing their missions.
Most of the notable incidents include one incident in August 2025, at Nyaguku Catholic Church in Nyamira County, where the church equipment, including instruments, was taken.
Another notable incident dates back to July 2019, when a thief in Nyahururu penned an emotional letter to a Pefa church after a botched robbery attempt.
The thug revealed that he had been informed by one of the congregants about an amount of money that had been left in the church.
