President William Ruto has offered Ksh10 million targeting Kenyan content creators in another bid to boost the creative economy.

The President spoke on Saturday, May 2 at the 14th Kalasha International Film and TV Market Festival and Awards where he announced the government was ready to directly fund creatives telling stories around key national priorities.

Specifically, Ruto is willing to offer Ksh10 million to creators working with content around affordable housing and health – two areas the Head of State is extremely passionate about.

“I am making an offer. Those who want to pursue film and art in this space of affordable housing, I am asking my friends from the Kenya Film Commission (KFC) to include those categories. I am going to make an offer of Ksh10 million each in affordable housing and in health,” Ruto said at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre.

He added, “You know, there are things I am very passionate about… I am passionate about housing, I am passionate about health, and especially giving opportunity to every Kenyan,” he added.

Kalasha Awards, often dubbed the “Kenyan Oscars,” were established in 2009 by the Kenya Film Commission to recognise excellence in the local film and television industry.

This year, Ruto graced the event, where he also announced a series of new measures aimed at strengthening the creative industry in the country.

Besides the Ksh10 million offer, another standout directive announced was that 30 per cent of all government advertising would be channelled through creative platforms.

According to Ruto, the move is intended to boost investment in the sector and support young talent in digital creation, , film and music.

“I can confirm that the government has the resources to support and partner with creatives who tell our stories,” he said during the event, which brought together more than 3,000 delegates, 100 exhibitors, and representatives from over 30 countries.

In addition, Ruto also announced plans to engage international film producers as he directed the National Treasury to explore tax incentives to attract them to shoot content in Kenya.

Further, parliament has been urged to fast-track the Creative Economy Bill 2026 to strengthen copyright protections to ensure creatives are not only adequately funded but are safeguarded as well.

Ruto also directed that all future affordable housing projects incorporate creative spaces, including fully equipped audio-visual studios, to support production and storytelling.
