Health regulators have launched investigations into the death of a man who reportedly died after undergoing a surgical procedure at an unregistered medical facility in Trans Nzoia County.

The Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC) announced that it had commenced a formal inquiry into the conduct of the medical practitioner allegedly involved in the incident that led to the death of Brian Simiyu.

In a statement issued on Saturday, May 30, the council said it had been alerted to the case through reports from the County Government of Trans Nzoia and had already begun gathering evidence to establish the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.

KMPDC Chief Executive Officer Dr David Kariuki said the council was working closely with the county government, the National Police Service and other relevant agencies to secure crucial evidence.

“KMPDC has commenced a formal inquiry into the conduct of the medical practitioner allegedly involved in this incident,” Dr Kariuki said.

According to the regulator, investigators are collecting clinical records, witness statements and any available footage that could help determine what transpired before Simiyu’s death.

Preliminary findings indicate that the alleged procedure was carried out in premises that were unregistered, unlicensed and unsuitable for undertaking such medical treatment.

The council warned that any practitioner or facility found culpable would face disciplinary action, including suspension, revocation of practising licences, deregistration and possible criminal prosecution.

The latest case adds to growing concerns over patient safety and alleged medical negligence in the country, with several deaths linked to questionable medical procedures having emerged in recent months.

In January this year, a family in Kawangware sought justice after their relative, Amos Isoka, died following complications arising from a tooth extraction procedure at a local clinic. KMPDC later confirmed that the facility involved had been operating unlawfully.

The same month, detectives launched a probe into the death of lawyer Chris Mwendwa, who died after undergoing what was described as a minor surgical procedure at a Nairobi hospital.

An autopsy reportedly raised concerns that he may have been administered an overdose of anaesthetic medication during treatment.
