Protests erupt in Nanyuki over U.S. Ebola quarantine facility
Protests erupted in Nanyuki on Monday, June 1, as residents rejected the proposed plans by the government to construct U.S. Ebola virus quarantine facility in the area.
The demonstrations saw locals march through parts of the town carrying placards and leaves, chanting slogans rejecting the proposed facility.
According to the protesters, the Ebola quarantine facility will expose the community to unnecessary health risks and a potential outbreak of the deadly virus in the country.
“It is the Ebola facility they plan to construct here that we do not want,” one protester said.
“They should all go. No to Ebola quarantine facility in Nanyuki,” another one was heard saying.
Police later engage the protesters in running battles as they try to restore order in the affected areas.
The protests come amid controversy surrounding the United States-backed quarantine facility at the Nanyuki airbase.

The facility is expected to be controlled by the Kenya Defense Forces and will host US citizens exposed to the Ebola virus, reports which sparked public outrage, with leaders, human rights defenders, and the public rejecting the quarantine facility.
The High Court also issued conservatory orders suspending the planned construction pending the hearing and determination of the case petitioned before it.
However, the Ministry of Health remains positive that the construction will proceed, stating that it will challenge the orders suspending the facility.
The developments come in the wake of the Ebola virus outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda, with Kenya put on high alert. However, no case has been confirmed yet.
