Al-Shabaab militants attacks police camp in Mandera
Police officers in Mandera foiled an attempted Al-Shabaab attack after militants targeted a key security installation on Wednesday evening in a raid that was successfully repelled by officers on duty.
Police reports indicate that the incident occurred at the Jabi Quick Response Unit (QRU) Camp in Lafey Sub-County at about a few minutes past 7pm, when a group of suspected militants attempted to storm the facility.
Intelligence sources and preliminary accounts suggest that approximately 10 heavily armed attackers approached the camp from the north-eastern direction, opening fire in an apparent attempt to overrun the installation.
The attackers opened fire from a distance of about 600 meters, attempting to test the base’s defensive perimeters.
Security personnel from the specialised QRU responded, triggering a heavy exchange of gunfire between the attackers and officers stationed at the camp.
The sounds of the sustained firefight were reportedly heard in nearby villages and pastoralist settlements, sparking panic among residents in the area.
The assailants later retreated from the scene under unclear circumstances, with no casualties reported at the time of the incident, according to preliminary security assessments.

Security agencies have since secured the area and launched follow-up operations to establish the full details of the attack.
Additionally, standard lockdown protocols were immediately initiated at the camp after the exchange.
The incident comes less than a week after two people were killed and a woman seriously injured in a cross-border attack by suspected armed militia in the county.
According to police, the attack occurred at about 3am on June 8 when about 10 heavily armed assailants believed to have crossed from Somalia raided Elgolicha village near the Kenya-Somalia border.
During the raid, the attackers reportedly shot dead 82-year-old Abdo Ali Gole and injured his wife.
Another victim, Ibrahim Issack, a middle-aged man, was also killed near the border area before the assailants fled, according to police and local accounts.
