EACC arrests former senior government official over Ksh 12M fraud

Former Taita Taveta County Political Affairs Director has been arrested by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) over an alleged Ksh12.4 million fraud.

The former county official’s arrest follows investigations into the alleged fraudulent acquisition and misappropriation of public funds, with prosecutors expected to formally present the charges before the court as the case gets underway.

“Investigations established that the official fraudulently acquired public funds and failed to account for Ksh12,458,990 while serving at the Taita Taveta County Government,” the commission said.

According to the commission, the former county government employee is expected to be arraigned at the Voi Anti-Corruption Court on Wednesday.

Upon concluding its investigations, the commission forwarded the case file to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), recommending the prosecution of the official.

The ODPP reviewed the findings and approved charges of fraudulent acquisition of public property and deceiving a principal under the Anti-Corruption and Economic Crimes Act.

This is not the first time Taita Taveta County has made headlines over allegations of graft within the devolved unit.

In March last year, EACC secured orders to recover more than Ksh12 million from a former political adviser to former Governor John Mruttu after successfully pursuing a corruption case in court.

According to EACC Chairperson Abdi Mohamud, the recovery marked a significant milestone in the commission’s efforts to combat corruption after the former county official was found guilty of misappropriating public funds.

The official was convicted by Voi Chief Magistrate Mildred Obura for diverting imprest funds, advance public money meant for official expenses, by transferring the funds to himself from allowances allocated to members of the Taita Taveta County Assembly.

It was further established that the claimed activities were fictitious and, as a result, the withdrawn funds were never used for their intended purposes.
