The Ministry of Health has announced the posting of 6,360 healthcare interns who will begin their mandatory 12-month internship programme from July 1, 2026, marking one of the country’s largest annual deployments of medical graduates.
In a statement on Friday, June 26, Health CS Aden Duale said preparations for the deployment of the 2026/2027 internship cohort had been completed, with the interns set to report to healthcare facilities across the country.

The cohort includes 875 Medical Officer interns, 69 Dental Officer interns, 615 Pharmacy Officer interns and 2,000 Bachelor of Science Nursing Officer interns.
It also comprises 705 Bachelor of Science Clinical Officer interns and 2,096 Diploma Clinical Officer interns, bringing the total number of interns to 6,360.
The Ministry directed all eligible pre-interns to collect their internship offer letters in person on Monday, June 29, at Afya House in Nairobi from 9am.

The latest deployment comes nearly two years after prolonged disputes over the remuneration of intern doctors triggered nationwide industrial action and threatened to paralyse healthcare services.
In December 2024, the government reached a deal with the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU), leading to the cancellation of a planned nationwide doctors’ strike.
Under the agreement, intern doctors were guaranteed a monthly salary of about Ksh206,000 in line with the return-to-work formula and the 2017 Collective Bargaining Agreement, while the government also committed to settling outstanding salary arrears.
The agreement was signed by the Ministry of Health, the Council of Governors and KMPDU under the supervision of then Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, ending months of uncertainty over internship placements and remuneration.
The latest posting is expected to strengthen staffing levels in public hospitals across the country.
