Five missing activists found dumped by roadside in Nairobi

Five of six human rights activists who went missing following Thursday’s protests have been found and taken to the hospital, according to rights group Vocal Africa.

The group said the activists were located and are receiving medical treatment after going missing for more than 24 hours following their arrest near Parliament buildings.

Human rights organisations, including the Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC), raised concern on Friday after the six were unaccounted for despite visits to several police stations across Nairobi.

According to Vocal Africa, the six, Davis Lichuma (alias “Diffe”), Elisha Alam, Collins Ochieng, Frederick Odhiambo Ojiro, Muteti Mulinge and Michael Ngige (alias “Kenyatta”), were arrested on June 25 near Parliament.

“Five of the comrades who were violently arrested at Parliament yesterday have been located,” Vocal Africa said on Saturday, June 27.

It added, “They were found and are currently in hospital receiving medical treatment for physical injuries.”

The group said one of the activists, Davis Lichuma, is still missing.

Witnesses and fellow activists, including Boniface Mwangi, said the arrests were carried out by plainclothes officers during demonstrations marking the anniversary of the 2024 anti-Finance Bill protests.

They were later taken to Central Police Station in Nairobi, where activists say officers refused to book them in the station records.

They were reportedly moved from the station later on Thursday to an undisclosed location.

It remains unclear whether the six were included in the 355 arrests announced by Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen during a briefing on Thursday evening.

On Friday, a Nairobi court released more than 200 of those arrested on a Ksh1,000 cash bail, following legal intervention by civil society lawyers.
