KCSE candidate collapses and dies in Murang’a at Gakui Secondary School as student deaths rise.
Another Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education student collapsed and died on Tuesday evening, as yet another tragedy befell the national exams.
The candidate, who was a student at Gakui Secondary School, is reported to have collapsed on Tuesday afternoon and was rushed to hospital. She died an hour later while receiving treatment in hospital.
Confirming the incident, Kandara Deputy County Commissioner Peter Maina said the candidate was rushed to hospital with a pulse, but efforts to save her proved futile.
“The girl was rushed to a nearby health centre while unconscious but with a pulse…She was admitted and efforts to save her life commenced. Unfortunately, she did not make it,” he stated.
According to the Deputy County Commissioner, the incident took place in full glare of other students at the examination centre, but managers at the scene were able to contain the situation.
Murang’a County Education Director, Anne Kiilu also spoke on the student’s death, insisting it was purely health-related.
“This is purely a health issue where a pupil has succumbed to a condition that is yet to be ascertained,” Kiilu affirmed.
The body has since been moved to General Kago Mortuary ahead of an autopsy to determine her cause of death.

This was the third death of a KCSE student in less than a week since theory examinations kicked off on Monday, November 4.
In Tigania West, a family lost their son just hours before he sat his first paper. The candidate passed away around midnight, hours before writing his exam.
Kilometres away in Makueni County, Cornelius Maundu Musyoka from St. Dominic Kitise Secondary School passed away in a hospital after a short illness while on oxygen support at a medical facility.
In total five student deaths have been reported since the start of the KCSE exams. In East Wanga Ward and Ebubere Secondary School in Mumias East Constituency, Kakamega County, a 19-year-old lost his life in mysterious circumstances with his family claiming he left the house in good health.
More disturbingly, another high school student died after a fatal attack by his colleagues in a horrific Saturday night incident in Shiners High School, Nakuru County.
