The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has announced that it will disqualify political aspirants found to be using goons to cause chaos during campaigns and other electoral processes ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking during an event on Wednesday, April 22, IEBC chairperson Erastus Ethekon warned politicians that they face a possible disqualification if found to have necessitated chaos and disruptions to opponents.
He noted that the commission has experienced the use of goons by politicians, condemning what he described as a very bad phenomenon in which politicians exploit unemployed youth to disrupt electoral processes rather than engage voters peacefully.
“There is a very troubling phenomenon emerging in our political space. We have had situations where youth are being used as goon sor mobilised to cause violence,” he stated.
Ethekon further noted that the commission is closely monitoring politicians’ conduct and warned that any politician found culpable of orchestrating violence would face serious consequences, including disqualification.

“Going forward, I promise you that we will not hesitate to disqualify any politician found culpable of disrupting the electoral process,” he added.
The chairperson referred to the political violence witnessed during the November 2025 by-elections held in Mbeere North, Malaba, and Kasipul constituencies.
His remarks come amid heightened concern over rising tensions, as seen recently in political gatherings and in personal attacks on politicians.
Vihiga Senator Godfrey Ostsi was recently attacked by goons in Kisumu, beating him and causing serious injuries before being airlifted to Nairobi for specialised treatment.
Also, goons have disrupted political rallies, especially those organised by the opposition, with the politicians accusing the government of sponsoring the attacks.
