Chelsea agree on a deal for first January signing
Chelsea have agreed on a deal for the first January signing of Derby starlet Dylan Williams.
Dylan Williams, a Derby County midfielder, is set to join Chelsea.
However, Thomas Tuchel’s first-team squad is unlikely to include the 18-year-old.
Instead, the left-sided defender is being considered for the development squad.
Derby manager Wayne Rooney stated on Friday that a fee has been agreed for the highly-rated teenager with a Premier League team.
It has since emerged that Chelsea have struck a deal.
Rooney said: “We’ve agreed on a fee with a Premier League club for Dylan Williams – I couldn’t stand in the way of his opportunity.”
Tuchel is still looking to recruit at least one player before the January transfer window closes, with left wing-back Ben Chilwell’s anterior cruciate ligament surgery the priority position.
The German had hoped to sign cover earlier this month, warning that his team’s season may be jeopardized if they did not strengthen in the face of a crippling injury list.
Since then, his title challenge has crumbled, with Chelsea lying 12 points behind Premier League leaders Manchester City after winning just one of their last seven games.
