Chelsea suffer major injury blow ahead of Club World Cup
2 min readClub World Cup; Chelsea suffered a major injury blow during their FA Cup clash against Plymouth Argyle side on Saturday.
With Mason Mount pulling up against Plymouth Argyle, Chelsea could be missing one of their key players for the next Club World Cup.
Mason Mount hobbled off against Plymouth Argyle with an injury, which might be a concerning injury blow for Chelsea ahead of the FIFA Club World Cup.
The Blues midfielder started the match at Stamford Bridge against the League One side, only to be substituted in the 96th minute of the fourth-round contest, which had gone to extra-time.
Saul Niguez, a fellow midfielder, eventually took his spot.
The scores were equal at the time of Mount’s replacement, after Macaulay Gillesphey and Cesar Azpilicueta had traded first-half goals.
However, his absence did not deter Thomas Tuchel’s side, who managed to take the lead in the first half of extra time, thanks to Marcos Alonso’s goal.
Chelsea might be dealt a major setback if he is unable to play, as the current European champions are scheduled to fly to Abu Dhabi for the Club World Cup after the match.
With seven goals and seven assists in all competitions so far this season, the academy graduate has been a significant performer for the Blues.
Chelsea already has to deal with the loss of manager Thomas Tuchel, so an extended layoff would be a difficult pill to swallow. The German has tested positive for Covid-19, and was absent against Plymouth.
He’ll also miss the Blues’ Club World Cup semi-final since quarantine rules will keep him in the UK until at least Wednesday.
