Craziest records in football: fastest hat-trick, oldest player, most redcards and more

Football is a beautiful game full of crazy and chaotic moments that are fascinating to football fans across the world.

Guinness World Records has been kept busy attempting to keep track of all the strange and unexpected events that have occurred.

Craziest football records

Let’s look at some of the craziest records in the footballing landscape that are truly remarkable, and maybe will surely, possibly, maybe, never, ever be broken… forever:

Longest goal ever scored

Newport County goalkeeper Tom King remarkably scored a goal-kick that clocked in at a staggering 96.01 metres (105 yards).

Also, Asmir Begovic entered the Guinness World Records for his wind-aided strike against Southampton that measured in at 91.9 metres.

Oldest active player

The oldest active footballer, according to Guinness World Records, is Ezzeldin Bahader, who made history in March 2020 when he played for Cairo’s 6th October Club at the age of 74 years and 125 days.

During his record-breaking appearance in Egypt, Bahader, who was born on November 3rd, 1945, even managed to score a penalty. It’s incredible.

Fastest hat-trick

Astonishingly, Tommy Ross managed to post a hat-trick in just 90 seconds for Ross County against Nairn County in 1964.

Most goals in a calendar year

One of the more well-known world records in the sport is Lionel Messi scoring a remarkable 91 goals across 2012.

Messi scored 79 goals for Barcelona and 12 for Argentina, breaking Gerd Muller’s old record of 85 goals for Bayern Munich and West Germany.

Highest-scoring game

The world record for the most goals in a football game, which had been held by Arbroath 36-0 Bon Accord since 1886, was shattered in 2002, according to the Guardian.

AS Adema won by a whopping 149-0 margin, with their opponents, Stade Olympique L’Emyrne, banging the ball into their own net 149 times in protest over a refereeing decision.

Most career goals scored by a goalkeeper

It’s difficult to envision another goalkeeper like Rogerio Ceni, who scored 131 goals for Sao Paolo between 1997 and 2015, through free kicks and penalties.

While Rene Higuita and José Luis Chilavert showed a knack for scoring goals, no one can match Ceni’s unwavering consistency, which saw him score 21(!!!) goals in the 2005 season.

Longest penalty shootout

According to Guinness World Records, the final of the 2005 Namibian Cup was the longest penalty shootout in history, with 48 spot-kicks.

KK Palace ultimately kept their nerve to defeat the Civics 17–16 in a shootout that lasted as long as the game itself, with some players needing to take three penalties.

Most red cards in a single match

According to the Independent, 36 red cards were issued during the 2011 match between Claypole and Victoriano Arenas in Argentinean football’s fifth division.

In the first half, two players were sent out, but after a huge brawl after the break, referee Damian Rubino sent off every single player, substitute, and member of the coaching staff.
