CUE sends 200 graduates back to class 3 years after graduation after undertaking an unapproved course
CUE sends 200 graduates from Egerton University back to class 3 years after graduation after undertaking an unapproved course.
The Commission for University Education (CUE) has sent 200 graduates from Egerton University back to class for remedial classes if they want to secure jobs with their degrees.
The students studied Bachelor of Science, in Water and Environmental Engineering but failed to secure approval from the Engineers Board of Kenya (EBK).
Since graduating in 2019, the student reported finding difficulty securing jobs.
It was revealed that Egerton University offered the course without the approval of CUE, making the graduates unemployable.
The Research and Education Committee of the National Assembly undertook the matter and recommended that the students should be offered eight remedial courses to boost the quality of their degrees.
“The schedule of offering the remedial courses should start in September 2022 and concludes at latest by December 2024 through a planned schedule,” the statement by the Research and Education Committee of the National Assembly read in part, as per Nation.
Three graduates petitioned National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi in March 2022, requesting Ksh2.2 million from the institution after failing to find jobs following graduation.
They claimed in their appeal that they enrolled in the university in 2014 and were promised that the degree they were pursuing was CUE-accredited.
The trio demanded that the University be forced to grant them the eight remedial courses as well as a payment of Ksh750,000 each to help them finish their degrees.
The graduates also demanded that the university discontinue offering the 1997-launched programme.
