DCI issues security alert after being hacked on X and Facebook

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) issued a security alert following a cyber-attack on its official social media accounts.

In a statement on Sunday, February 9, DCI said the attack briefly compromised its digital platforms, including Facebook, before they regained control.

“For some moment this evening, we experienced a cyber-attack on the DCI digital platforms (X and Facebook), but have since regained full control,” the statement read.

During the period of unauthorized access, cybercriminals used the platform to post misleading information, including fraudulent message promoting cryptocurrency and digital tokens.

The DCI, however, clarified that this message was entirely fabricated.

“During the short period, the cyber criminals who attempted to take over the accounts posted the information captured on the screenshot below.

“Note: The information is therefore FAKE and not from the DCI. A scrupulous interrogation into the criminal activity has been activated to bring to book the perpetrators,” the statement added.

This comes barely a week after both KBC and K24 TV X accounts were hacked.

KBC’s account, with over 800,000 followers, was compromised on Friday, January 31, with hackers rebranding the account to ‘DeepSeek AI’.

This breach led to unauthorized posts promoting cryptocurrency scams.

Similarly, K24 TV’s X account, boasting over 3 million followers, was hacked around Thursday, February 6.

The hackers transformed the account into a Beyoncé fan page and used it to disseminate cryptocurrency schemes.
