EACC nabs two KRA officers while collecting Ksh900000 bribe

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has arrested two Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) employees for allegedly soliciting a Ksh900,000 bribe from a taxpayer.

The two suspects, both based at KRA’s Upper Hill offices in Nairobi, were taken into custody following a formal complaint lodged with the Commission, as confirmed by EACC on June 22.

“The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has arrested two employees of the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) over allegations of soliciting and receiving a bribe in connection with a tax matter,” stated EACC.

EACC established that the duo allegedly demanded Ksh3 million from a taxpayer in exchange for influencing the outcome of a Capital Gains Tax (CGT) assessment worth Ksh4.5 million.

“The suspects , both based at KRA’s Upper Hill offices, were arrested following a complaint that they had demanded Ksh3 million from a taxpayer in exchange for influencing the resolution of a Capital Gains Tax assessment amounting to Kes4.5 million,” stated EACC.

Capital Gains Tax (CGT) is a tax charged on the profit made from the sale or transfer of a capital asset, such as land, buildings, shares, or business assets. The tax is calculated based on the difference between the asset’s selling price and its original purchase price.

Acting on the complaint, EACC operatives moved swiftly and set up a sting operation targeting the two officials at their workplace.

The suspects were caught red-handed receiving Ksh900,000, which was part of the agreed bribe amount, during the carefully coordinated operation.

Images also reveal that part of the recovered items included a stash of counterfeit KSh1,000 notes.

The recovered money and the arrested suspects were subsequently taken to the Integrity Centre, EACC’s headquarters, where processing of the case began immediately.

Both officers now face action under the Anti-Bribery Act, 2016, a law that carries serious penalties for public officers found guilty of corruption.
