Former Deputy IG Noor Gabow opens up on 2022 Bomas chaos

Former Deputy IG Noor Gabow questioned about his leadership on the 2022 Bomas chaos during vetting
Former Deputy IG Noor Gabow questioned about his leadership on the 2022 Bomas chaos during vetting.
The events of August 15, 2022, at the Bomas of Kenya, resurfaced Friday during the vetting of former Deputy Inspector of Police Noor Gabow for a diplomatic post.
Gabow who has been nominated as the Consul-General to Haiti was appearing before the National Assembly’s committee on Defence chaired by Belgut MP Nelson Koech.
As the lead officer in charge of the venue which was the national tallying centre, Gabow was questioned about his leadership and whether he had prepared well for the job.
“As the officer in charge of command at that time, would you say, of course, with the benefit of hindsight and retrospection that you would have better prepared for such kind of an important exercise for the country?” Shinyalu MP Fred Ikana posed.
In response, Gabow acknowledged his responsibility as he defended security officers for their efforts in ensuring stability adding he has even been recognised.
“It is true that I was in charge of Bomas and I want to tell the members that I received the Undugu Award for peace,” he said.
“With all the challenges, the security officers did a commendable job during the period.”
He emphasised that the role of the officers deployed was to ensure peace and tranquillity is kept within the tallying centre.
“As police officers like in any other tallying centre in the republic we were working for the IEBC as the employees,” said Gabow.
He went on “Whatever we did is the same principle I could even use tomorrow if I am made in charge.”
Gabow also addressed reports that police officers currently in Haiti are leaving the mission as has been widely speculated.
He described the reports as misleading and should be ignored.
“No officer has left. They just require our support. They are doing an excellent job, they are being paid. We should not rely on social media, it can be so destructive,” he stated.

Gilgil MP Martha Wangari and her Lagdera counterpart Abdikadir Hussein had sought clarification over the matter while seeking to know how he would address concerns by the officers including their welfare.
“Our officers are being paid their salary… the opening of this mission will enhance their welfare,” he said.
Gabow at the same time revealed that they are developing a peace fund which will be ready in the next two weeks.
“Just like in the military, our Central Bank will have the peace fund for the police…the money will come straight and in a short time,” he stated.
He further stated that the officers have managed to secure several vital installations including airports, hospitals, State House and police stations.
If approved, Gabow will be based in Port Au Prince, the capital city of Haiti which also hosts other embassies.
