Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru has defended the move by her administration to provide meals for county revenue collectors.

Speaking on Thursday, March 20, the county boss acknowledged that a Ksh4 million allocation had been budgeted for the annual expense.

She explained that the money was being used to provide meals for the officials who were required to work extra hours.

Waiguru also added that it was crucial to compensate the employees given that they were only earning Ksh15,000.

The governor reiterated that the meals were fair given the circumstances of the work, adding that she had no apologies to make.

“That Ksh4 million they were talking about is the budget for a whole year. These revenue collectors, we only pay them Ksh15,000 and I tell them to help me collect revenue so that we reach Ksh700 million. They have to be at the market at 4 am when lorries come to offload goods.

“They are there to collect taxes. Now, you are telling me that I should not give them a supplement to have breakfast. I have no apologies to make about that because I want them to work,” she expressed.

Earlier, while appearing before the Senate Public Accounts Committee, Senators questioned the Ksh4 million budgetary allocation.

In particular, Homa Bay Senator Moses Kajwang’ – who also chairs the committee- wondered why the county was still having workers to enforce revenue collection when the process was digitised.
