Harry Maguire’s former teammate says defender “isn’t fit to captain Man Utd”
2 min readHarry Maguire’s former teammate Ahmed Elmohamady at Hull City has declared the £80million defender isn’t fit to captain Manchester United.
Harry Maguire’s position as Manchester United’s captain has been called into question in recent weeks and now one of his former Hull City team-mates has given a brutal verdict
Interim manager Ralf Rangnick has stood by Maguire amid calls for him to be stripped of his duties following a poor run of form.
Maguire reportedly held showdown talks with Cristiano Ronaldo over the club’s captaincy recently, though the England international dismissed suggestions of a row.
The pair experienced two contrasting outings during Saturday’s remarkable 3-2 triumph over Tottenham as Ronaldo scored a stunning hat-trick to bail Maguire out following his hapless own goal.
With speculation surrounding the defender’s role in this current United side still rife, Harry Maguire’s former teammate Elmohamady has insisted Maguire doesn’t have what it takes to captain the historic club.
“Harry was with me in Hull City and, in my opinion, he doesn’t have the level to be the Manchester United captain,” the Egyptian international told beIN Sports.
“Man Utd need a player with a strong personality and I hope that the next manager will give the captaincy to Ronaldo if he stays.
“Ronaldo can handle this responsibility and pressure. However, Maguire can’t.”
The pair spent three years together with the Tigers between 2014 and 2017 – a spell that included relegation to the Championship.
Both went their separate ways in summer 2017, with Elmohamady moving to Aston Villa while Maguire was snapped up by Leicester City.
Two years later, the England international would be on the move again, joining United in a then club-record £80million deal, before being handed the captain’s armband six months later.
Maguire himself recently hit back at suggestions he was embroiled in a tug-of-war over the club’s captaincy with Ronaldo.
He recently tweeted: “I’ve seen a lot of reports about this club that aren’t true and this is another,”
“Not going to start posting about everything that is written but I needed to make this one clear. We’re united and focused on Sunday. Enjoy your day everyone.”
It has since emerged their Maguire’s recent performances have even prompted his current United team-mates to question his place in the Rangnick’s first XI.
