Fans have asked Harry Maguire to step down as captain after his answer to dispel rumors of a breach between him and Cristiano Ronaldo at Manchester United backfired.
Harry Maguire has reacted angrily to the insinuation that he is in a power struggle for the Manchester United captaincy with Cristiano Ronaldo.
Maguire was responding to an exclusive report in the Daily Mirror that highlighted a schism in the Manchester United locker room.
Ralf Rangnick has asked Ronaldo to influence the younger players in the dressing room, according to the article.
And, despite his public rebuke on social media, the German might go even further by handing Ronaldo the captaincy till the end of the season. This is thought to have enraged Maguire.

But it has spectacularly backfired for the center-back, with fans not holding back in the replies to his tweet.
Maguire tweeted: “I’ve seen a lot of reports about this club that aren’t true and this is another.
“Not going to start posting about everything that is written but I needed to make this one clear. We’re united and focused on Sunday. Enjoy your day everyone.”
However, Maguire’s tweet backfired as fans asked him to step down as United captain.
One fan tweeted: “Just give him that armband, you’re nowhere near the level to be our captain.”
“Mate you’re a nice guy. Just not a United captain material. Period,” a second added.
A third fumed: “You should have never been made a captain! Please respect the club captaincy history and pass the armband to someone with character and leadership.”
“Whether or not you are going to admit it, you shouldn’t have been the team and you should just consider yourself lucky to put on this beautiful club Jersey,” a fourth added.
