How government spent Ksh1 billion on foreign travel in 3 months; CoB report

The National Government spent slightly above Ksh1 billion on foreign travel within the first three months of the 2024/2025 financial year, a report by the Controller of Budget shows

The National Government spent slightly above Ksh1 billion on foreign travel within the first three months of the 2024/2025 financial year, a report by the Controller of Budget shows.

In the report covering government expenditure between July and September 2024, Ksh1.10 billion was spent on foreign travel while domestic travel expenditure amounted to Ksh2.49 billion.

During the period, the highest foreign travel expenditure was recorded at the State Department of Foreign Affairs at Ksh574.66 million. This was over 50 per cent of the total expenditure of the entire national government on foreign travel.

Other top spenders on foreign travel were the National Assembly and Senate at Ksh173.96 million and Ksh80.61 million respectively.

The Parliamentary Joint Services spent Ksh48.42 million within the three months.

The Judiciary spent Ksh39.56 million while the office of the Auditor General spent Ksh29.20 million within that period.

Meanwhile, the State Department for Immigration and Citizen Services spent Ksh27.87 million.

Other notable spenders were the State Department for Diaspora Affairs (Ksh10.98 million), the State Department for Labour and Skills Development (Ksh11.10 million) and the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (Ksh14.68 million).

Some of the least spenders on foreign travel were State House (Ksh5.77 million) and the Office of the President (Ksh1.34 million).

The Office of the Prime Cabinet Secretary spent Ksh9.38 while the Office of the Deputy President spent (Ksh1.72 million).
