IG Koome issues travel advisory this festive season
Inspector General of Police (IG) Japhet Koom cautions motorists against flaunting traffic rules this festive season.
In a statement on Wednesday, December 16, IG Koome noted that 16 people have lost their lives from two accidents in the past week.
He cautioned Motorists against flaunting traffic rules during the festive season.
“From our data, road traffic accidents are a leading cause of injuries and fatalities, with negative financial and health implications of accidents on victims and caregivers.
“Already we have had two major fatal road traffic accidents in which we have lost a total of 16 people in Machakos and Nakuru since last week,” read the statement in part.
In addition, the police IG reiterated that traffic police officers, working in conjunction with their colleagues from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) and the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) to guarantee safety on roads.
“The National Police Service has the mandate to enforce traffic laws. However, I wish to emphasize that road safety is our collective responsibility as Kenyans. We must change our behaviour on the roads.
“Therefore, I am appealing to pedestrians, cyclists, boda boda riders, passengers, and drivers to adhere to traffic rules so that we make this festive season safe for all of us.” read the statement in part.

In the travel advisory, the IG noted that in addition to the increased movement during the festive season, the El-Nino rains had compounded in causing poor visibility on the roads.
Koome also recalled all officers on leave to resume duty immediately in a bid to enhance police visibility.
Interior CS Kithure Kindiki had directed Koome to recall the officers to boost security during the festivities.
Koome noted that this move was geared towards improving visibility and security in the police department during the season.
The IG’s travel advisory comes after 16 people passed away in 2 separate accidents one in Nakuru and another in Machakos.
On Monday 4 people died after a 60-seater bus collided with a matatu along the Nakuru-Eldoret Highway.
In another accident during the week, 12 people died in an accident in Machakos when the breaks of the matatu they were traveling in malfunctioned.
