Kanini Kega unveils plans to block Uhuru's Jubilee NDC

Kanini Kega moves to block Uhuru's Jubilee NDC after allegedly hosting National Executive Council (NEC) officials

Kanini Kega moves to block Uhuru’s Jubilee NDC after allegedly hosting National Executive Council (NEC) officials.

East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) lawmaker Kanini Kega, on Thursday, May 18 unveiled plans to counter former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s National Delegates Conference (NDC), which is set to take place on May 22.

Speaking to the media, Kega who claimed to act as the party’s secretary general said that his section had met as a National Executive Council (NEC) to strategize how they would thwart Uhuru’s intentions.

Kanini Kega added that the meeting would be held on Friday, May 19, when the faction allied to President William Ruto will receive various reports from its party organs regarding the Uhuru NDC.

He also hinted that they will call their own NDC to approve changes to the party’s leadership in the upcoming days.

Uhuru, jubilee vice chairperson, David Murathe, and secretary-general, Jeremiah Kioni, were ousted and replaced by MPs Sabina Chege (nominated), Adan Keynan (Eldas), and Kega (EALA) respectively.

“There will be no NDC on Monday, May 22, and if they purport to hold it, then it will be basically treated like any other political rally. We have a Constitution that needs to be followed.

“The NEC met and made changes to the party’s leadership pending an NDC, which will be called in due course. NEC sat and determined that the NDC was not called procedurally,” he argued.

On the other hand, he expressed that Uhuru was wasting time holding the NDC, given that he had already been ousted as the party leader.

“The moment you seize to operate in an office, even if you sign the document, it will not have the force of law. I think he is just embarrassing himself.

“It is like he is just signing a document as a president yet he is the former President,” he added.

The move by Kega’s faction came a day after Uhuru was denied a chance to hold the meeting at Bomas owing to planned renovations.

On the other hand, Jeremiah Kioni allied to Uhuru, maintained that the meeting would proceed as planned with three other venues in the offing.

Kioni added that they would reveal the new venue to the delegates in due course.

“We want to assure the delegates of Jubilee that an NDC will be there on Monday. We have secured another venue, actually two more. It has come to our attention that nefarious individuals purport to collect names for our NDC.

“Please note that as a party, we are not involved in any collection of names or monies ahead of our NDC,” Kioni countered.

Uhuru convened the Jubilee NDC slated for May 22, days after he was replaced as party leader by nominated MP Sabina Chege.

The Kanini-led faction – which pledged support for President William Ruto – ousted Uhuru after the former President visited the headquarters and sided with Kioni in ongoing leadership wrangles.
