NARC party leader Martha Karua was on Monday unable to represent Ugandan opposition leader Kizza Besigye at the General Court Martial.

The trial resumed on Monday, December 2, but Karua had yet to get her special practicing certificate to represent Besiggye.

Karua together with Besigye’s legal team visited the Ugandan Law Council seeking an update on the temporary practicing certificate.

Karua, who is expected to lead the opposition leader’s legal team, said she hasn’t yet received accreditation from the Law Council of Uganda to represent Besigye.

Karua revealed to have held a telephone call with Justice Irene Mulyagonja who assured her to look into the matter and give feedback as early as December 3.

“I have in turn tasked her and pleaded that they process my application expeditiously because the case is going on today and I will not be able to address the court without the approval,” Karua said.

Karua might have to wait a day before legally representing the Ugandan opposition leader.

The NARC party leader opined that the case has attracted many senior advocates in Kenya and the African continent who are willing to represent the Ugandan opposition lawyer.

“There are many other advocates from Kenya who are willing to come, some even more senior than me, and as far as Nigeria, our network of Pan African opposition leaders solidarity network of which Besigye is a member and I am the coordinator is going to pull lawyers from various parts of Africa to come and join us,” Karua said.

Karua is in Uganda to lead a team of 50 lawyers in defending former Presidential Candidate Besigye and Hajji Obeid Lutale in the court martial.

Besigye and Lutale were allegedly abducted in Nairobi on November 16, where they were expected to attend the book launch of Martha Karua

Besigye and Lutale were arrested in Nairobi and charged with unlawful firearm possession.
