In a rare display of emotion, under fire Kericho Governor Erick Mutai shed tears at a funeral service on Wednesday, pleading with members of the County Assembly not to proceed with an impeachment motion against him.
This after Sigowet MCA Kiprotich Rogony tabled the impeachment motion before the Kericho County Assembly on Tuesday, citing constitution violations, gross misconduct and abuse of office, thereby putting the Governor’s first term in jeopardy.
Speaking at the burial of former Kipchimchim Ward MCA Robert Bernard Kipkorir, the Governor humbled himself before those in attendance, pleading in his native Kikuyu tongue for mercy.
This was a notable departure from the typical demeanor of Kenyan politicians, who are often characterized by their hubris.
“To the MCAs, I might have made mistakes like any other human being, I might have wronged you,” said the emotional Mutai, according to The Nation.
“But we have worked together in good and bad times. I have assisted you individually and collectively without favouring anyone. Please forgive me. If you must correct me, do so, but do not impeach me. Don’t strike me down like a snake.”

Mutai further invoked his family into his woes, hoping it would influence the MCAs decision regarding his potential ouster.
“I am a father of three young children. The eldest is in class seven, the second is in grade three, and my youngest is still breastfeeding. I ask for your mercy,” he said.
“As leaders, we carry a heavy cross full of nails. Along the way, we are bound to stumble. I may have made those stumbles, and for that, I ask for your forgiveness.”
Mutai’s impeachment motion will require support from at least two-thirds of Kericho County MCAs.
Should the motion meet the criteria, the case will proceed to the Senate whereby a special committee will be formed to investigate the matter.
The Governor will then avail himself before the Senate to defend himself against the charges.
The Senate will then vote to either uphold or reject Mutai’s impeachment.
