CNN international correspondent Larry Madowo has been forced to flee for safety following an attack by Haiti gangs while in an interview with PM.

Larry Madowo was interviewing Haitian Prime Minister Garry Conille at the General Hospital, also known as the Hospital of the State University of Haiti when they came under fire.

They left the area under a heavy convoy of forces led by the Haitian National Police (HNP) Director General Normil Rameau and the General Commander of the Multinational Security Support Mission (MSS).

“We were interviewing the Haitian prime minister, the interim prime minister, and we’ve been told we have to leave. This is an old hospital where he used to work. It’s a combination of Kenyan and Haitian forces protecting the prime minister. Everyone has an armoured car,” Larry said as he walked towards their vehicle.

In a joint statement, the HNP Director General Normil Rameau and the General Commander of MSS Godfrey Otunge said they provided cover to enable the PM to leave the area.

The police said Conille had finished the interview in the liberated hospital when the gangs launched the attack.

“Towards the end of his interview, two shots were heard from the nearby neighbourhood. After the PM had successfully completed the interview, he left the hospital with his security detail but at one of the corners at the Hospital, some security officers fired some shots to provide cover for the PM’s exit,” a joint statement by the HNP and the MSS said on Monday as reported by CNN.

MSS, HNP recapture key Port-Au-Prince port Earlier, Kenyan police officers deployed for the MSS mission in Haiti successfully recaptured the Auorite Portuaire Nationale (APN) in Port-au-Prince.

The officers, alongside Haitian forces, repelled gang members who had occupied the strategic seaport since March 6, 2024.

The gangs’ control of the port had severely hindered the delivery of essential supplies, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis in Haiti.

MSS Mission Commander Godfrey Otunge confirmed the successful operation, marking a significant achievement for the first group of 200 Kenyan police officers.
