Liverpool transfer; £167M player has rejected contract extension after Liverpool made contact with the player’s representatives to sign him.

According to Marca, Ronald Araujo has turned down a new contract offer from Barcelona after Liverpool approached him about signing him.

Liverpool are interested in bringing the 5-cap Uruguay international to the Premier League, according to SPORT.

Xavi recently addressed Araujo’s contract dilemma, saying he hoped to see the 22-year-old sign new terms “soon” to settle the situation.

The Spaniard said: “Yes, it’s a priority to renew Araujo’s deal. You can see he’s an important player for me, for the team. Extraordinary defender. Very important we reach an agreement quickly. He’s a player for the present and the future.”

Araujo has already turned down Barcelona’s first offer, prompting Manchester United and Chelsea to become aware of the issue, according to Marca.

The South American and his representatives are alleged to have quickly rejected Barcelona’s offer.

However, the discussions were cordial, and both parties are anticipated to resume talks at a later date.

Araujo is under contract with Barcelona until June 2023, with a €200 million (£167 million) release clause.
