Man City issue a statement after Phil Foden and mum caught up in violent brawl
Phil Foden and mum Claire were caught up in a brawl as they attended boxing event with Man City releasing a statement in support of their player
After images on social media showing Phil Foden’s mother being struck by a man after a scuffle at Amir Khan vs Kell Brook, Manchester City released a statement saying they are “shocked and outraged.”
Foden and his family went to the AO Arena in Manchester, when violence erupted outside their executive box in a corridor.
The England international, who had played for Manchester City in their 3-2 loss to Tottenham earlier in the evening, looked to be pursued by a gang of individuals.
He retreated in an executive box before Claire, 41, a woman thought to be his mother, appeared to confront the group before the situation escalated and she was struck by a man.
“The club is aware of a video that has circulated on social media depicting Phil Foden and his family being harassed and assaulted,” Manchester City said in a statement.
“We are shocked and appalled about the nature of the abuse and ensuing assault on one of Phil’s family members.
“We will continue to give Phil and his family all the support and assistance they need.”
Several punches were thrown as the brawl broke out, with Foden seen re-emerging from the room but playing no further part in the fighting.
His girlfriend, Rebecca Cooke, also stands away but appears to be heard shouting “Claire!” as the carnage plays out.
The situation eventually calms down and those involved flee the scene, with one man appearing to launch a fire extinguisher.
Greater Manchester Police are not understood to be investigating the incident.
A spokesman for the AO Manchester Arena said: “We are aware of an altercation that took place at the end of the evening as guests were leaving the arena.
“Venue security were on hand and no one requested medical assistance.”
The fight appeared to break out just as Kell Brook made his way to the ring ahead of his win over Khan, with his ring walk song, ‘All of the Lights’ heard blaring out in the background of the clip.
Brook went on to beat Khan in the sixth round of the huge grudge match.
