Sources privy to the investigations intimated that the suspect now claims she stabbed Maigo in self-defence, and that she was a victim of rape.

She reportedly told detectives that Maigo picked her up by the roadside as she had been chased from her house due to a misunderstanding with her guardian.

The 16-year-old suspect was on Wednesday arraigned before Magistrate Zainabu Abdul at the Milimani Law Courts on a miscellaneous application filed by corporal Patrick Boge who indicated that police needed to conduct mental and age assessments on the suspect as required before one faces murder charges.

The court granted the application allowing detectives to detain the accused for the next 21 days pending investigations.

The suspect will undergo both age and mental assesment over the said period before standing trial.
