Motion to impeach Kericho Governor Eric Mutai tabled
Notice of a motion to impeach Kericho Governor Erick Mutai tabled before the County Assembly.
Kericho Governor Erick Mutai’s term in office is in jeopardy following the tabling of a notice of motion for his impeachment before the County Assembly on Tuesday, September 24.
The mover of the motion, Sigowet Ward MCA Kiprotich Rogony wants the governor to be kicked out of office, citing three offences; violating the Constitution, gross misconduct and abuse of office.
In the motion, he argues that the governor’s actions have exposed the county to ridicule and essentially brought shame to Kericho.
Rogony is the vice-chairman of an ad-hoc committee that was mandated to investigate the revenue collection process and how the county spent every coin.
In the motion, the MCA accuses Governor Mutai of operating with impunity by leading a mob to invade a piece of land owned by a private resident within Kericho town and reserving the land to be used as a dumpsite without NEMA’s approval.
Further, Rogony claimed that several female individuals had lodged complaints against the governor for forcing them to engage in inappropriate sexual acts.
The MCA confirmed that, during the hearing of the motion, the victims would be heard on camera to protect their identities.

Mutai is also accused of using his office to intimidate officials who disagreed with his directives.
“The governor has persistently intimidated, harassed county officers who do not sing to his tune leaving officers jittery and creating an atmosphere of fear, uncertainty and despondency in the county and thus creating a toxic work environment,” the motion reads in part.
MCA Rogony will require support from at least two-thirds of other members to move the motion and impeach the governor.
Thereafter, the case proceeds to the Senate whereby a special committee is formed to investigate the matter.
At this time, the governor appears before the Senate to defend themselves against the charges. The Senate will then vote to either uphold or reject the impeachment.
