Nursing Council of Kenya warns of unapproved courses at Northlands college

The Nursing Council of Kenya (NCK) has warned the public against enrolling in unapproved nursing programmes and named Northlands International Medical Training College as an institution allegedly offering courses without the council’s authorisation.

In a public notice, the regulator said it had received information that the college was claiming to offer nursing training despite lacking approval from the council.

The NCK emphasised that it is the only body mandated to accredit nursing and midwifery training institutions and programmes in Kenya.

“Any course offered without NCK’s approval is not recognised and does not meet the required standards of training and professional practice,” the council said.

The warning means students who enrol in unapproved institutions risk pursuing qualifications that may not be accepted in the health sector.

The council also clarified that some programmes being advertised by private institutions are not recognised under its framework.

“Further, we caution the public that Nurse Aid or Nursing Assistant training is not a recognised programme by the Nursing Council of Kenya,” the statement said.

Students, parents and guardians were urged to verify the status of institutions before applying for admission.

“We urge prospective students and their guardians to verify the accreditation status of any institution before enrolling in any nursing or midwifery programme,” the council said.

The list of approved institutions and programmes is available on the council’s official website.

This comes just hours after the Technical and Vocational Education and Training Authority (TVETA) revoked the accreditation of the Kenya Institute of Management (KIM) and ordered the immediate closure of all its campuses, stating that the institution has been operating beyond its legal mandate.

In a notice issued on Monday, April 20, 2026, the regulator said it had found KIM running and awarding academic and professional courses without the required authorisation, in violation of laws governing technical and vocational education and training in Kenya.
