Outrage after police arrest a protester for buying a flag
Tensions escalated in Eldoret as police officers arrested a protester identified as Peter Njogu, who was buying a flag and a whistle.
The arrest occurred on Tuesday amidst a growing wave of protests across the country, with law enforcement authorities on high alert.
“I was arrested while buying a flag and a whistle. They have asked me to get in here, they are saying they want to ask me some questions. I don’t know whether they will release me,” Njogu stated.
His arrest has sparked further outrage among protestors, who see it as a crackdown on their right to peaceful assembly.

Reacting to the incident, Martha Karua condemned the police after arresting an anti-government protester.
The Narc -Kenya party leader, in a statement shared on X on Tuesday, July 16, 2024, accused the police of criminalizing the national flag.
“Criminalizing the flag,” Karua said.
Karua commended the young generation for fearlessly demanding accountability from the political leaders.
She further added that the Gen Zs have succeeded in bringing the national government and political class in check in a way that the veteran politicians have struggled to achieve.
“I am incredibly grateful to witness Gen Z in Kenya reclaiming our agency and fearlessly demanding accountability from political and religious leaders, succeeding in ways we, as politicians, have struggled to achieve,” she said.
The anti-government protester, Peter Njogu was arrested today early morning in the streets of Eldoret town.
Speaking to the media, Njogu said that he was arrested for buying the national flag and a whistle.
