Bungoma County is reeling from shock and grief following a series of attacks on individuals, raising concerns over the rising insecurity in the county.

The latest incident is the attack of a Public Health Officer, Pascal Wakafura, on Monday, May 11, at his home in the Forest View area along the Musikoma-Bumula road.

According to witnesses, the victim, who served as a public health officer in Bungoma, was attacked by unknown assailants shortly after arriving at his residence.

Neighbours say they heard a commotion and a voice believed to be that of the victim calling for help before his body could be found moments later at the edge of his compound.

Witnesses say that his vehicle, a Toyota Sedan, was also found with the engine still running and his compound gate open, suggesting an ambush as he entered his home.

Leaders from Bungoma, led by Kanduyi MP John Makali, expressed deep sorrow over the killing that he says has been paramount lately in the county.

“I have received with deep shock and sadness the news of the tragic death of a dedicated Public Health Officer serving the people of Bungoma County. That his life ended in such a cruel and senseless manner is heartbreaking and deeply disturbing,” he stated.

“These senseless killings must come to an end,” he added.

The incident has sparked fresh concern over rising insecurity in the county, with residents questioning the effectiveness and responsiveness of security agencies amid a series of violent incidents reported in recent weeks.

Leaders and residents report recent violent episodes at different entertainment joints like Club Solutions Sang’alo, Wekelekha Simba Wanyika Bar, and Club 039 as part of a worrying pattern that has left residents living in fear.

They now call on the Ministry of Interior and the police to move swiftly and bring the attackers and assailants to justice and to restore security in the county that they now claim has deteriorated.

“I call upon the Ministry of Interior and all security agencies to move with speed and bring those responsible to justice. The people of Bungoma deserve safety, peace, and protection,” the MP added.
