Safaricom breaks silence on reports of sharing Mpesa data with KRA
Safaricom assures Mpesa customer of their data safety following reports on integration Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) tax system.
Kenyans using M-Pesa services have nothing to worry about following the one-hour delay on Tuesday, January 9, as their data is safe and secure.
This comes after Safaricom PLC verified that the M-Pesa service outage was not caused by any interaction with the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) tax system.
Esther Waititu, Chief Financial Services Officer at Safaricom, refuted the allegations and reaffirmed KRA’s position on the matter, which has since been resolved.
“On Tuesday, we had a slight challenge in terms of delivering service for about one and a half hours, and we recognise that this was terribly inconvenient for a lot of our customers. “Let me be clear that there was no integration. KRA has declared publicly that there was no integration that happened between M-pesa and KRA. KRA is a separate business entity and Safaricom, M-Pesa specifically… and with that sharing of date is not permissible, and we are governed under the Data Protection Act, we cannot share data of our customers,” said Waititu, while speaking to Citizen TV on Friday, Janauary 12.

Esther Waititu noted that the issue that almost affected over 30 million M-Pesa customers across the country was resolved, and services resumed.
She assured Kenyans that everything is back to normal and that the company does not anticipate such inconveniences in the future.
“…services continue to run, and we assure Kenyans and our customers specifically that everything is fine, and we do not anticipate any issues going forward,” the officer added.
This comes after the Tuesday, January 9, M-Pesa delay saw many businesses using the Lipa Na M-Pesa services, and those relaying other M-Pesa services halted transactions.
Safaricom however, apologised for the outage after getting the system back in order and even gave some customers cash and airtime as compensation for the inconveniences suffered.
