Seven people left dead in renewed Sondu clashes with Nyanza Governors now demanding for deployment of GSU officers

Seven people left dead in renewed Sondu clashes with Nyanza Governors now demanding for deployment of GSU officers.

The number of deaths in Sondu along the Kisumu-Kericho border has increased to seven following renewed clashes.

More people were attacked on the night of Wednesday raising the number of deaths to seven.

This was confirmed by the Upper Nyakach assistant county commissioner Darwin Orina who said they lost more lives at night.

Tension still remains high as more shops remain closed despite police presence in the area.

According to reports businesses from the Kisumu side have also been burnt down.

As of Wednesday, three deaths were reported with five people; four males and a female left nursing arrow injuries and are currently admitted at Nyabondo Mission Hospital.

One teacher was also axed during the attack and is currently undergoing treatment at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital

Kisumu County Security Team, led by county commissioner Hussein Alassow Hussein held several meetings at the border town to quell tension between the two communities residing in the area.

Meanwhile, Nyanza Governors, Anyang’ Nyong’o (Kisumu), James Orengo (Siaya), and Gladys Wanga (Homa Bay) have demanded for deployment of GSU police to quell clashes in the Sondu region.

In a joint statement, the governors lamented that attempts by the police to re-establish security, law, and order have been futile.

“In fact, the police from the Kericho side have either shown substantial support for the warriors or turned a blind eye to their attacks on our people.

“We strongly propose that the government urgently sends a contingent of GSU to that area to restore peace and security,” the governors stated.

The three governors pinpointed the blame on the neighbouring communities in Kericho County.

“The issue of the boundary between the two counties should be settled expeditiously using lawful and proper government procedures,” Nyong’o, Orengo, and Wanga proposed.
